A verbose Google

Official Google Blog: Two new improvements to Google results pages

Consider a simple search of "kings nbc tv show based on samuels wikipedia" as shown below:

We know that the series is probably based on Samuels even before we read the Wikipedia article. However, the text on this link is not extended. The text in David is.

I don't understand the whole process by which Google chooses which "blue text" to expand more than others. If you do, please leave a message. Thank you!

A new calendar for the healthplex

Do you know when to go to the fitness center? Well, now you have one more tool in our toolbox which will help you remember when you need to be in the fitness center.

1. It is a public calendar. You do not need to sign up with anyone to see it.
2. It is a secure connection (RC4 128 bit secure connection). Keep crackers from altering the information you see from the information we send.
3. It is a Google Calendar. Add it to your list of Google Calendars and see it with your other Google Calendars to see for schedule overlaps and avoid any delays.

Are you ready? Jump in ...

Just want to know the hours the fitness center is open? No problem! Just click here. :D

Side-note: IE8, the latest iteration of Windows Internet Explorer, seems to be better than its predecessors. A healthy competition exists in the web browser market, with Apple, Google, Mozilla, Opera et al trying to grab a slice of the pie. Even Microsoft seems to be serious about its commitment to standardization with IE8.

For a comparison of web browsers, please click here. As of March 19, 2009, kdg recommends Mozilla Firefox stable. Get it here. However, I must add that kdg believes in standardization, thus also supports the spirit of "any browser" as Jacob Ozolins said, "All browsers support the internet, and this internet site supports all browsers". Please visit the any browser website for details.

If you have enough traffic in the first place, that is ...

I have been running an experiment on Website Optimizer since May 2008 but I still do not have a high confidence winner. :(

YouTube - The Shortcomings of the Stimulus Plan

Krugman wants a 1.4 trillion dollar stimulus package. How much is 1.4 trillion dollars? I have never seen 1.4 trillion dollars in cash before my eyes. However, does it really matter?

If Greenspan, wildly celebrated until 2004, or even 2005, had a role, albeit tiny, by not responding to the crisis, who can we believe? I remember BBC doing a feature on Alan Greenspan as late as 2006, noting that Alan Greenspan even had a song dedicated to him.

What do you think?

It seems Ars Technica is down at the moment. I am checking it again, and it could be just me who got the 500 error.

Google Sites down? (March 06, 2009)

It appears that Google Sites, the replacement for Google Pages, might be down for a bit today. I have been getting 502 errors for more than five minutes now.

According to Google, Google Sites is "powerful enough for a company intranet, yet simple enough for a family website". While I have not heard about it from Google or anyone (including their blog) so it could be just me. :)

This is what the error message reads like:

Google
Error

Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.

Please try again in 30 seconds.

Good to know: Landed at last

This is something that I have been looking forward to for a long time... during a time that Google Mail did not allow .zip archives as attachments.

The new feature is very useful and the progress bar is just the icing on the cake. As you would expect with Google, the UI is clean and effective.

Thank you, Google Mail Team!
